As a flagship event of the Graduate School of Economics since 2015, the Hawaii Conference has been providing young researchers at leading universities in Pacific Rim countries with invaluable opportunities for academic interactions. The goal of the Hawaii Conference is to promote international joint research and to stimulate the academic activities of Kobe University and partner universities. As in the last year’s meeting, the 7th Hawaii Conference was held in a real-time Zoom Webinar format due to prolonged concern about the COVID-19 pandemic. The specific theme of this year’s Hawaii Conference is “The COVID-19 Pandemic and Economic Activities”. Outstanding researchers from Kobe University (Japan), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), National Taiwan University (Taiwan), the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (USA), and the University of Melbourne (Australia) presented their recent projects. Due to the organizers’ extensive advertisement via websites, emails, and a digital poster and brochure, approximately 80 people observed the 7th Hawaii Conference, a substantial increase compared with the 6th meeting. At the 7th Hawaii Conference, Associate Professor Chris Mitchell at Kobe University served as the conference moderator. At the commencement, Professor Denise Eby Konan, Dean of the College of Social Sciences, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, and Professor Ryuzo Miyao, Dean of the Graduate School of Economics, Kobe University, gave opening remarks. The keynote speaker, Associate Professor Victoria Baranov of the University of Melbourne, delivered an inspiring lecture on chains of poverty and mental illness. Six researchers, including Professor Tomoko Kinugasa and Associate Professor Kaiji Motegi at Kobe University, offered interesting presentations on a wide range of topics such as behavioral economics, macroeconomic forecasting, panel data analysis, survey analysis, and time series econometrics. The speakers and two commentators, Professor Nori Tarui at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and Associate Professor David Wolf at Kobe University had active and fruitful discussions on each presentation. The five-hour Conference was concluded successfully with Professor Tarui’s closing remark.
